Du Hsiao Yueh
Du Hsiao Yueh (度小月) traces back to 1895 in Tainan, when a fisherman named Hong Yu-tou sold noodles from a shoulder pole during the slow fishing season. Fishermen called those lean months 小月, and his lantern read 度小月, "getting through the lean months". The flagship is still in Tainan, and Taipei has two branches: one in an old shophouse on Dihua Street in Dadaocheng, and one on Zhongxiao East Road.
The order is 擔仔麵 (danzai noodles): a small bowl of noodles in shrimp broth, topped with braised pork sauce, garlic, black vinegar and a single shrimp. A bowl is NT$60 at Dihua Street, and it really is small, so most people add a braised duck egg (NT$20), the danzai rice noodles, braised pork rice or the golden shrimp rolls.
The Dihua Street shop is spread over two floors, with fairly tight seating.
