The Tamsui–Xinyi Line (the red line) got a new eastern terminus on Sunday, Aug. 30. Guangci/Fengtian Temple Station (廣慈Guǎng cí/奉天宮站Fèng tiān gōng zhàn) sits 1.4 km past Xiangshan, under Fude Street in the far east of Xinyi District. It's the first new red-line stop since Xiangshan opened in 2013, and the new stretch is free to ride through Monday, Sept. 28.

What changed for riders

  • The full line now runs Tamsui ↔ Guangci/Fengtian Temple. The shorter Beitou ↔ Da'an trains still turn at Da'an, with some peak-hour runs extended to the new terminus.

  • Fares to the new station are the same as to Xiangshan during the free period; only the Xiangshan ↔ Guangci/Fengtian Temple leg is free. Single-journey riders can get a voucher at the information desk.

  • Roughly 15–20 minutes from Taipei Main Station, about two minutes from Xiangshan, and about an hour end to end from Tamsui — one train, no transfer.

  • Two exits, both on Fude Street: Exit 1 in the administrative building beside the Xinyi District Office, Exit 2 in the welfare building of the Guangci Boai Park complex.

  • Taipei Metro now counts 118 stations and 132.5 km.

Why one station took ten years

First proposed in 2005, approved in 2009, and under construction since late 2016, the extension is the project Mayor Chiang Wan-an has called the most difficult in the MRT's history. Fude Street is only 25 metres wide, the station box is about ten storeys deep, and at the tightest point equipment worked 60 centimetres from people's homes. The shallow ground is former wetland; the bedrock below turned out about four times harder than surveys predicted, slowing the boring machine to about 2.5 metres a day.

Opening day still drew a crowd. People were lined up before 1 p.m. for the 2 p.m. first train, and the station logged close to 10,000 entries by 5 p.m.

Opening-month extras

  • Weekend market in the B1 corridor near Exit 1 on Sept. 5–6, 2–8 p.m.

  • Live music at the station on Saturday afternoons through Sept. 19.

  • 500 FamilyMart soft-serve cards a day at the information desk while supplies last.

  • A prize draw for riders through Sept. 28 (30 annual passes, 90 bicycles).

For the neighborhood itself — Hushan trail, Fengtian Temple, and the small shops along Fude Street and Songshan Road — we're working on a separate guide. For fares, tap-to-pay, and the rest of this year's transit changes, see getting around Taipei in 2026.
