A local friend told me there's a place in Beitou run by an ex-Din Tai Fung chef, serving the same fried rice and chilli-oil wontons at half the price. They warned me about the queue. I walked in on a Monday afternoon and sat straight down.

Small noodle and dumpling shop on Zhonghe Street near Beitou Carrefour, run by a former Din Tai Fung chef of 20 years. The signature pork chop fried rice comes with a bone-in cutlet over wok-fried rice, other options are red oil wontons with pork filling, scallion egg fried rice, and hot and sour soup.
