Din Tai Fung
Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐) started in 1958 as a cooking-oil shop on Xinyi Road, run by Yang Bing-yi and Lai Pen-mei. The name combines the names of two oil companies tied to the founders. Xiaolongbao came in 1972, and within two years it was a full restaurant. It now has branches around the world, but only about a dozen in Taiwan, most of them in Taipei. The original Xinyi Road shop is takeaway only these days, with dine-in in the building across the street, and that branch holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.
The xiaolongbao are the reason to go: 18 folds each, NT$290 for a basket of ten after the June 2026 price increase. Most tables add the shrimp fried rice (NT$320), shrimp wontons in chili oil (NT$240), a side of greens (NT$130), and maybe the sweet and sour pork or the steamed taro buns. Expect around NT$750 a person if you eat well, plus a 10% service charge.
There are no dine-in reservations. You take a numbered ticket at the door, fill in a paper menu while you wait (English and picture menus are available), and can follow the queue live on Din Tai Fung's website or app.
